We are a family of three Caucasians with one dark-skinned latin child who I adopted from Colombia. I would love for my son to meet another family like ours. He is only 2 but I can tell that he is just starting to become aware. It is a subtle awareness now but I know it will of course grow and if I put myself in his place, I think that I would have liked to have grown up knowing other people like myself.
I think that as kids develop their sense of identity they like to see themselves reflected in the kids and families around them. We know plenty of other latin kids but we don't know any other latin kids growing up in white families.
Does anyone know of a play group, support group, message board, yahoo group, ANYTHING for Colombian Adoptive families in New York City? I know it's early but I'd love to connect with another family or two. It would be so nice if my son could grow up knowing a few other special families that are like ours.
Many thanks for any input!
Yes there is the LAPA group which stands for Latin American Parents Association -- they have functions for your Latin American child in the NYC region -- ....it is an excellent program I believe their website is www.lapa.org...let me know if you need help finding it. I know that they have a picnic coming up in September...Good luck!!!
