Baby Ruth, You were adopted at a time when many truths were white washed or changed. You can apply for your non-id from the state - sometimes you will get lucky and get just enough info to do something. Make sure you ask for ALL info and letters etc so they don't just send you bits and pieces. New York Adoption Laws NY also operates a mutal consent registry but do not get your hopes up because... 1. Mothers were sometimes told their child had died - so why register. 2. Mothers were sometimes told they had a child of the opposite sex than what they really had...remember most were put out for the birth...so even if they registered there is not a match because it is the wrong sex. 3. Courts and adoptive parents in some states (not sure of NY) were allowed to change details (so the pesky birth mother could not find her child) so birthdates, places, hospitals were changed. So matches in these cases will NEVER happen... 4. Dead people cannot register. 5. Few people know the registry exists and mothers in particular were warned NOT TO SEARCH and that they could go to jail etc... 6. Mothers were told their babies were BLANK SLATES and would never search... Really the list is endless and I think the last stats for matches was something dissmal like 9%? BUT REGISTER ANYWAY because you may be one of the few matches... If an agency was used (the state may also be able to tell you this) you should also ask them for your non-id. I see you posted your search on the registry on this site. Also consider ISRR.net - another free registry that is highly recommended. You can also check the message boards on Ancestry . com under adoptees or place. The final thought is if you still live in NY is to check old newspapers at the library around you birthday in the personal section...probably nothing but you never know. Kind regards,Dickons
