I just recently received a copy of my original birth certificate and certificate of adoption. Mine was a closed adoption, so I never had any info, until recently...
I live and was born in Texas and found it was not time consuming, almost no cost and very easy to do myself rather than pay someone a fee to do it for me. I was able to gain lots of info from the documents (Certificate of Birth and Adoption) I received, which included- my birth parents names, bmom maiden name, number of children born before me, state of birth mother's birth and address they were living at the time of my birth. Luckily, with mine the last names were not too common and there were a large number of children before me so I was able to find her quickly on Facebook.
All I had to do was contact a very nice lady in Dallas at the State of Texas Juvenile Department, fax her some basic info about me, listing the reason that I would like to have the record open was due to medical history and a copy of my driver’s license. By the end of the day she had sent it to the judge in the correct court to make the order (I didn't have to be there or anything). Once she receives it she sends you the order certified mail (which needs to read its an order for the Juvenile Department and the Vitals Records Department to open it) and if your info is in her office she will let you know how to obtain it. If it is not in their office, you will receive notice that the file is empty and then it has most likely been moved to the Vital Records Office in Austin. All you have to do after that is either go in (if you are near Austin) or send the order along with $10. for the copies and you will receive them.
My whole process took less than a month; I was amazed at how easy it was. If anyone would like more details oand/or the name of my contact in Dallas or at the Vital Records Office in Austin, let me know. Good luck!
