Hi everyone! I am new to posting but have been lurking for a while now. I just have a few questions about the Korea adoption process because most of the posts I have read here seem very different from what seems to be the process at our agency in CO.
We filled out a pre-application and then a formal application with our agency at the end of August. As soon as that was received, along with our phase 1 fees, we were told we were #20 on the waiting list for a baby boy. We were told that we should wait to start our homestudy until we are #10.
Our agency works with ESWS. Has anyone else gone through Eastern? Was this the same process? It sounds like most other people do their homestudy first and then get on a wait list for a referral.
Also, about how long is it taking to get a referral from Eastern?
And finally, what kinds of questions do they ask during a homestudy interview?
Thanks for responding!
Hmm. That is interesting! We are not working with Eastern, so I can only comment about the homestudy.
I've had 2 different homestudies through two different agencies for 2 different countries... yet they were very similar.
They ask all kinds of questions! Some are benign and some are pretty personal!
They'll ask you about your parents and siblings. How old they are, what they do, if they're living, what kind of relationship you have with them. How often you see them. How often you talk to them (on the phone I guess). What kind of parents your parents were. What you did for fun as a family when you were a child.
They'll ask about your schooling. What you do for a living. What you plan to do when your child comes home (take a leave, daycare, reduced hours, or SAH).
What kind of parent you are to your present children (if you have any). What kind of parent you plan to be (what you think is important).
What your current children are like, if you have any. If they are looking forward to a new sibling.
How you and your spouse met. How long you've been married. Sometimes they want to know who does what around the house.
What you do for fun individually and together. Hobbies.
How you plan to incorporate your child's ethnicity into your home/family.
They'll ask about how your family will accept a child that was adopted. If you have experienced infertility they'll ask if those feelings are resolved.
That's about all I can think of. It's more like a conversation, not like a test. Hopefully this gives you an idea.

Good luck! Welcome to the process. Each American agency does things differently and some of that is effected by the Korean agency they work with. It seems like a lot of the people on this particular site use SWS (us included) and Holt. I'm sure there are some going through Eastern too and they would be a better resource.
The blogs I follow it seems like most are going through Eastern so I've heard a lot about it but it's not our experience. I don't think that what you stated was unusual. They want to keep your homestudy from needing updating too quickly by waiting until you're closer to referral to get it finished. Eastern's wait after referral to travel isn't quick so there is a good chance you will have to update your homestudy (and USCIS fingerprints, etc.), but hopefully not more than once.
The homestudy is really more like a SW getting to know you and your family. Your SW wants you to be successful. Our SW was extremely friendly and easy to talk to. It didn't feel like we were being grilled, just a conversation. Even DH (who does NOT like answering lots of private questions) said that it wasn't too bad.
Good luck! Hope others here can give you more info on your agency. If you want to check out my blog, on the sidebar are a lot of other people who are adopting, many are through Eastern so you could link to them.
