I am a single African American women looking to adopt a African American or bi racial infant. I have looked at a lot of the agencies on line but I am not sure what to do. I am confused by many of their fees and cost. I live in Ohio and I am not sure what path to take. I am new to this whole process because for the past few years I have been trying to save for infertility treatments, but have just come to the discussion that I want to adopt. My main question is what are the best agencies to go with when trying to adopt an new born I have found a few that have special programs for people that want to adopt African American or bi racial children but I also know there are a lot of scams out there to. I am hoping someone can help me weed through the real agencies that will help and help steer me away from the ones that will just scam me. I am also on a budget and was wondering is it if economically feasible for me to search and try to find my own birthmother?
Any suggestions or help will be greatly appreciated.
Can't help you as I adopted mine from foster care. Just wanted to welcome you and wish you good luck!!

Hi Brown Eyes,
Welcome to the forums! We are an AA couple hoping to adopt an AA infant as well. We are using an agency in our area. We wanted to be able to meet with them and feel comfortable before we decided to sign with them. We are pleased so far but we are still in the early stages.
I did a lot of research on line before I narrowed down our search. There are websites that allow agency reviews to be posted, you should check them out. We also met with the director and felt very comfortable with her, about the fees and when they are due.
Hope this helps!

We went with a local agency as well. I wanted to be able to see someone face to face if needed. Most states have a listing of licensed adoption agencies. You can also call your local foster care state agency or state office of adoptions and ask them to recommend an agency. My county recommended the agency we ended up using...
If you attend a large church check to see what adoption agencies they have worked with before. My church has an adoption & foster care ministry and they give out information packets of your options and a list of agencies. The agency that our foster care CW suggested was on the list plus the adoption ministry point of contact had used that same agency.
Regarding finances... some agencies have sliding scale fee structures. What you pay is based on a percentage of your income.
I'm not sure if you live in a state that allows advertising or not... if you do then it's a good way to keep an adoption low cost. You would still need an adoption attorney to handle the paperwork. If you are thinking about doing this start contacting adoption attorney's to get an idea of their fee structure.
