Hi everyone, my husband and I are officially waiting to adopt. We are signed up with one agency but wonder if we should sign up with more. I would like to know from other black couples if they used one or several agencies. We have also considered using a consultant, any thoughts on those?
I guess I'm questioning this because I've seen several available situations on different websites in various states but haven't heard anything from our agency yet.
Any feedback would be appreciated!

I did my own networking outside of our agency..but it can get expensive. What services are your present agency providing? pm me.

You might want to review your current agency's policy on using more than one agency. Some agencies will not allow their clients to be signed up with multiple agencies. If they do allow it then carefully choose the other agencies because more than likely you will have to pay registration fees and send them copies of your homestudy and profile. You may want to look at some referral agencies if you state allows it. They typically get the situations where an agency or an attorney has no one in their waiting pool of families open to that situation. AA families tend to get snapped up quickly so most agencies are always looking to add to their waiting family pool.
We're an interracial couple-my husband is black-and we are using a consulting agency. They shared some of our information with two agencies and a private attorney before our home study was completed. The two agencies have contacted us a couple of times already to see if our FBI checks are in yet. . .they just came this week, so our Home study should be signed and available to mail off early next week. We keep getting told by the home study SW, the consulting agency SW, and both agencies "you won't wait very long at all." Of course I guess we'll actually see now that everything is complete! I would think you would get chosen quickly.

Well we are still waiting. We plan to sign up with an Ohio referral agency this week. Thanks, to those of you that referred me to the agency, she seems nice.
Our current agency is ok with us looking for our own adoption situation too. Thank goodness or this would really be hard. I'll let you all know how it goes.
I guess we have only been at this for a few months so I should just be patient, it's just hard not having control over the situation.
Can you PM me with details on this referral agency? It seems that they have gotten good reviews? How are their costs? All the ones I have seen charge $7,500.
I've been hearing about the need for AA adoptive parents and how fast the process would be for them. We're and AA couple and it's been 4 years working with CPS and a private agency and still no child. What are we doing wrong?

Since we've not adopted yet, my information may not be very helpful  however we've gotten several calls a week about situations. We've declined to be shown on a lot of them either because the fees exceeded our budget or there were medical concerns we felt we might not be prepared to handle. We were matched once, but the family decided to parent. We have been shown to another emom who went with another family, and we're currently waiting to hear about a third. Since we just got our homestudy completed in November, and spent a month matched (therefore not looking at situations) we feel like it's gone pretty well. We used a consulting agency who has connected us to several agencies across the country. . .that way we have the ability to be shown to a lot more expectant families than we would from one agency. . .maybe that's the difference?
Pikea, we used a local agency and also listed with other agencies throughout the US. We just had to make sure the agencies were ok with us listing with others. We were like the LBs in that we were presented with many situations that exceeded our budget. We were finally matched with our local agency and now have a 1 week old baby! I guess our process went quick compared to some but I would list with multiple agencies. You can PM me if you have specific questions. Good Luck, the process can be stressful.
