Spiderman was watching Arthur while I was doing "grown-up things" (making beds, folding clothes) in the same room when I heard the word "aspergers" and started to pay attention. The episode dealt with Buster Bunny making a new friend who sometimes acted oddly.
(He did not like loud noises and was obsessed with jigsaw puzzles.) Buster decided not to be his friend anymore until someone explained what aspergers was and why his friend acted the way he did. Buster adjusted his approach and went back to play with his friend.
Spiderman "got it" and even identified a child in his class who acts that way. " He eats the exact same lunch every single day and reads the same book during silent reading every day."
This episode might be useful for explaining to classrooms. It would even be helpful for older children who need to understand and be more accepting of differences. It was over by the time I thought of taping it, but maybe you could find it -- or look online.
Cool. My dh has three aspergers kids in his classroom. He is on a mission to stop the teasing. Pre teens are brutal!!:hissy:
