My son is a foster-to-adopt placement. When he came to us he was 18m old. Now his is 22m and still acts like 12m old. He is very behind in speech, doesn't ever really play with toys. He wanders around with no purpose 80% of the time. I found the M-CHAT online and he failed. I have made a Dr appointment. Is there anything else I can do?
If his doctor's appt is very soon, you can just wait until then. If you are anxious to start working with him, get the book "floor time" and it will give you some ideas.
My son, at 25 months, when we brought him home was just as you describe. Only he wandered around aimlessly AND spun in circles and screamed and flapped and eye stimmed and lots of other very autistic things. He was also completely non-verbal until 2.5 at least.
Today, after a year of behavior therapy he is doing much better as far as his level of interaction with the world. That said, as you can see from another thread I posted, not all his interactions are positive :eyebrows:

I'm am a behavior therapist that has been working intensively with children with autism and other developmental delays using Applied Behavior Analysis for almost 3 years. I'm sure you've heard this before but you have to be consistent and NEVER give in or give up. Early intervention is key to children with autism once you start to break through the barrier that has them locked in their own worlds the progress is amazing. Please feel free to private message me with any specific questions you might have.
Contact your local school district and ask them about the local early intervention program (or google your city, state and early intervention). Contact them and set up an appointment for an evaluation.
Doctors are fine but as Kate said, early intervention is key.
Good luck!
