Hello all-
I have my inspection on tomorrow afternoon. My caseworker gave me slight info on what to expect. Since her info wasn;t good enough I am turning to the experts- you- to find out realistic expectations.
Once the house has passed state inspection and becomes licensed (my case worker told me this happens during the time of the state inspection visitation) how soon does my name go on the list of available foster parents?
Thanks
not sure where you are. in my state - i had two inspections: a health inspector and a fire inspector
my health inspector was a pita. she was able to flag us for anything she demed unhealthy - even when the states water quality expert disagreed. :p
its hard to tell you what the health instpector looks for - other than obvious things like all toxic stuff needs to be locks up, firearms and ammo locked in separate locations. no obvious issues with mold
we also got wrote up for a ramp going into our barn having a weak part in the wood and there being an old piece of farm equipment on the property

Oh it depends on who you get. The first one we had, she checked some things (water temp, that nothing was too near the furnace, etc) but spent a long time sitting and talking with me and said she bases a lot on if she'd feel comfortable letting her kids spend time here.
Then we had another lady a few times, very thorough but kept wanting to not pass me because my bio-kids (boy and girl) shared a room and they were over the age of 5--even though every where in the rules it said that opposite sex kids over five can't share a room ONLY for the child in placement, so why my bio-kids were any of her business...grrrr.
The most recent we've had, by my own resource worker's admission, tends to "come late, stay long and not check things on the list". Yes. We've had her twice now. She comes late, she stays too long (through my family eating dinner around her) and wants to check for things that SHE personally feels are important and aren't necessarily the real rules.
SO...just make sure the obvious things are okay: water temp, smoke/carbon monoxide detectors, outlet covers, safe/clean house, etc. and I'm sure you'll be fine. Good luck!
@wwcurry66- I am in NJ
@gigisam- I recall my resource worker telling me the inspectors are subjective and each on is vsstly different, I have spent a week cleaining everything throughly. The smoke and CO2 dectors, socket protectors, first aid kit, safety latches and gates are all set and ready to go.

Sounds like you're ready then. And seriously, if they find something they don't like, if it's small you may be able to fix it right then in front of them or the worst case is they have to come back to see that you've fixed it. All in all, they WANT you to pass, they need families...so they're going to work with you to make it happen.
