Help, We have been with dcfs for 2 years in fost-adopt status. Something is dropping in our lap (maybe) :woohoo: . Does anyone know if we can use state homestudy with a private adoption?
I know you can get a redacted copy of your homestudy. Not sure if this abridged version will be accepted by the private agency you're working with (assuming its an agency).
Probably best to call adoption unit in Trenton to ask someone there.
Good luck.

I was under the impression that you would have to do a new homestudy, but I could be wrong. In any case, good luck with the lap situation~!
DYFS will give you a copy of your homestudy, but good luck using it with adoption agencies.
We tried private and international agencies, and every single one wanted me to do another home study. It's all money to them.
Your homestudy expires after 18 months, according to the laws of NJ, so one way or other, it will have to be redone, and the homestudy for private adoption is often written slightly differently than a DYFS homestudy, especially if this will be an interstate private adoption (ICPC laws for BOTH states must be satisfied). It would have to be just "updated" by DYFS, if at some time DYFS were to present you with an adoption situation.

Yes, this. They will not supply the actual references, etc. just the homestudy report that says that all of these things were checked. And actually, the copy you get won't even say exactly WHAT they checked (like the daycare provider you used or your primary care physician) if I'm remembering right. I know it didn't list all of what they checked.
It might be useful enough for an initial pre-screen for a match, but after that, you might be required to do a full homestudy--but you might at least have a better chance at knowing it would be worth the cost because you appear to be "the" match. Would depend on the placement agency.
