i was born in buffalo ny 11/21/72
my records are sealed, i have the non identifying information. i dont know how to start looking for my birth mother or how i would obtain her name. i want to petition the courts to open the records, but i dont have any medical condition that would warrant that. any advice or direction would be appreciated!

i just talked to the agency that handled my adoption and i am not able to petition the nys couts to open my file because apparently it is against the law to do that. she says that my only option is to register at the nys registry and wait. well ill try that. darn.

Check into the laws yourself. There are great resources here on adoption.com, including summaries and links to all the different state laws. It's never against the law to petition the court to do something. They may not grant it, but you can always ask.

thanks, i figure ill call a friend of my family back in buffalo, he is a family lawyer and see what he says. it dosnt hurt to try

you're lucky to have the non identifying information & that really can give you a lot to go on to do your own PI work. I know I'd be utilizing such information to its fullest. You might be able to talk to your personal doctor & have him/her petition the courts for medical purposes, regardless if there is a medical need. Let him/her make one up if need be.

Hi. I'm in your same situation. I live in NC and i have my non-identifying info but it's like where do i even start. i've been told that the records are sealed and there's nothing i can do. i'd really appreciate any information you get on how to start a search. i'm also on a waiting list...well actually i was told that it would take a least 6 months just to get my name on the waiting list for a registry, so it feels kind of hopeless at this point. i wish you the best of luck in your search.
