Louisiana State Senator Danny Martiny is proposing a bill that basically provides access to original birth certificates to those at least 24 years old. The 2011 Regular Legislative Session began Monday, April 25, 2011 and ends June 23, 2011. If the bill passes, it will go into effect August 15, 2011. Here is the proposed bill in full text: http://legis.state.la.us/billdata/streamdocument.asp?did=741855

Every person has the right to their own birth certificate. Whether you support this or not, speak up and make a difference.
The committee hearing on this is May 17. I've written emails to each of the 7 senators on the committee. The bill has been revised to actually include the entire adoptee's file from what I understand. This is a huge thing. Everyone involved with a Louisiana Adoption from any aspect should write in support of SB155.

Does anyone know if this passed or not? I was born in New Orleans and had a private adoption through an attorney and I have no information other than my date of birth and hospital. If I can get a copy of my original birth certificate that would be incredible.
The bill was passed out of committee and is scheduled to be voted on by the whole senate on Tues May 31 at 3pm!

I am so disappointed I didn't learn of this until today. There are only 5 days to go, and I'm wondering if there is anything at all that I can do at this point.
I was adopted in Louisiana, but I've lived in California for the past 6 years, so I don't have a representative to write to!
I have a bad feeling that this is just going to end in utter disappointment anyway.
Unfortunately, I was there for the vote and it failed on the Senate floor with 15 Yea and 21 Nay. This is the first time we ever got a bill out of committee and even though we gave in to every concern given, we failed.
Martiny has it back up for reconsideration but will refuse to do it unless he knows he has the votes and twice he's been asked since the vote on June 1 and twice he's said no. We need people to make phone calls and emails to all those who voted no!
It was never actually reconsidered and the regular session is over, so I'm assuming that the time has passed for this bill to be voted into law.
