Hi everyone,
I don't post here much at all anymore, but I think of you guys a lot. I just wanted to share my most recent experience in open adoption.
Widget is now 16 months old, and we've maintained open communication with both of his birth parents, K and T. They've been to our home, his birth father's mother visits every 2-3 months, and we keep up with his extended family through facebook. His birth mother moved 700 miles away last summer, and his birth father followed her over the winter.
This week, we made the 700 mile drive from our home in Virginia to St. Louis :drive: . I admit that I was anxious, as it had been some time since we were all together. As much as I wanted to see them, and I wanted them to get to know our son, it was a little overwhelming.
On Monday, they came to the apartment that we rented, and we had a nice dinner together. On Tuesday, we all went out to a very nice restaurant. Of course, with a 16 month old, I wound up sitting in the car with a cranky toddler :hissy: , but the other 3 adults had a great time. Yesterday, we met Widget's maternal bio grandma for the first time, as well as a few other relatives. It was very emotional for her...she had only seen his pictures on facebook. Today, K and T came back to our place for Chinese takeout. After we put Widget to bed, we played a card game, and just hung out. Tomorrow we'll be back to Grandma N's for more fun. Then on Saturday, we'll meet Widget's 5 year old half sister for the first time.
I just wanted to share this with you. I have benefitted so much from these threads, I hope someone else might find meaning in my experience. I admit, it is sometimes hard to do this, but the benefits are immeasurable. We all love this little guy so much, we will keep working to make it work. I am so blessed by our open adoption. :hippie:

I think it's great you guys made the trip out, I know how hard distance can be in any relationship, especially one so difficult to navigate. It sounds like your trip is a blast and that's it's gone really well.
And always thanks for posting the good stuff, it's always a nice reminder of how great open adoptions can be. :thanks:
