Hello all. This is my first post - an introduction and also a query for advice.
My name is Shannamarie, and I am an adult adoptee born December 11, 1980. My mother, who I am now looking for, is named Nancy Rodriguez and is from New Jersey. All of this story takes place in the same town - my birth, my mother's homes, and my search.
I was separated from my mother when I was 4 years old. The law felt it was doing what was best for me...and in a way, they were right. My mother constantly moved and lived in many places, and she left me in the care of various friends very often. She was also very depressed, and would neglect me [so sayeth the friends who testified against her].
I believe it, because in reading my adoption case, I showed heavy signs of reactive attachment disorder. Sadly for me, the science community was just discovering the disorder in 1980. Four years is not enough time for social workers to know about what is happening in the research world - not without the internet not existing... But even though she was an unfit mother, I miss her and want to see and meet her as an adult.
I wrote the central adoption agency, requesting non-identifying information and identifying information. What I received surprised me. I received 80+ pages in an envelope, with my mother's most recent address as of 2008 [she provided it to the agency].
June 9, 2011 - Received envelope from Central Adoption Agency.
June 10, 2011 - Went to the address listed, it was an office space. The people their were familiar with my mother and said she didn't stop by often. I left a note with my contact info and facebook.
June 13, 2011 - June 13th is my mother's birthday, so I bought her an orchid plant and a card and revisited the office. Left the plant and card in her care. She told me that Nancy only lived 3 blocks from there. At this time I wasn't sure of whether it was better for my mom to come to this office, or for me to go there. So I said I'll wait for her to come here.
June 14, 2011 - Went back, and spoke to the lady whom I had spoken to the first two times. Explained that I am looking for my mother. She said she would make sure Nancy receives the flowers.
June 16, 2011 - Anxiousness drives me to pay searchbug.com to run a check on my mother. It seems she still has the same living pattern - constantly moving. Her 2011 address as provided is a few blocks from where I live.
June 17, 2011 - I wake up early and return downtown to retrieve my orchids. I head to the address, which is hard to find. I speak to the [white, this has pertinence!] women sitting on the stoop smoking cigarettes to actually find the address. When I knock on the door, they automatically say "That lady passed away 2 weeks ago." My heart fell, but not far... then I decided to ask a revealing question. "I'm sorry that she's gone....what race was that lady?" "A little old white lady."
So here I am. My mother and family are puerto rican, so I will not believe they mistook her for a white lady. I am hoping. I am praying. So my mother is somewhere different than this address....right?
How do I search through to find if she is indeed the one who passed? How do I find the identity of the woman who passed? How do I find a mother who is constantly moving? I understand now why she gave the office space as her address - she was trying to give me a stable address to find her through.
What do I do now? How do I find more information?
