foster/adopt through private agency vs state?

Hi everyone, We are really new at this whole process, so please bear with me. We are looking adding to our family through a foster/adoption. We initially looked just at the state but I now realize there are opportunities to foster/adopt through private agencies. Is the process faster through a private agency? Any idea about the cost? Does anyone recommend an agency? Thank you :thanks:
