Here I go! I am a 31 single Autism teacher in northeast Florida. I have debated the single mom thing and am terrified. However, I was a Guardian Ad Litem in when I was in school...so I feel at least like I know little about the system...which may be more scary actually.
I will start the MAPP classes in October ( I have chosen to wait rather than rush in the larger county next door). I hope to do 0-3years. I would LOVE to adopt, but remember all to well the things that I saw and how frustrating the system can be with parents. I remember a parent saying they were doing drugs and "wished they weren't a mom, but did it"...the kids were put back into the home...they were returned the following day...then what happened after was just awful...
I am hoping to foster 1 child and then another...I am nervous and don't want it to be too much to fast and I HAVE to give my all to this to do it. The woman in my county was very good...but I live in a small county...so I am not sure if I will ever even get the chance for the age group I would like being single...but at the same time I am nervous and so scared about the possible hurt of this...I do know like with my students (most in foster care)...but I just want to make a difference on another level!
Any Florida foster advice?! Or advice in general?!
Hi! No advice here, we are halfway thru our MAPP Classes and will start the Home Study portion in the next two weeks. We are excited and nervous at the same time and still have so many questions. I actually come to the board everyday to read the advice others are giving....I don't have any advice but I did want to welcome you to the process.....

Hi Katie.... I am 33 single and planning to foster/adopt 0-4 yrs of age. Are you near Central Florida?
We are also in NE Florida but no longer licensed. We became licensed thru Boys Home. in 2006 in order to bring our niece here from Idaho to foster to adopt. We too had to take the MAPP classes, fingerprinting, homestudy, etc...just like any other licensed Foster Home.
Good luck!
Im interested in tracking your journey since I will soon, hopefully, be on the same journey. Single, 33 yr old woman relocating to FL to make fostering/adopting a reality for me.

Oh that is great! I am terrified...but excited! I just bought a convertible car seat and convertible crib from Target...both were on sale for $99. Beyond that it will just be getting my place home study ready and getting small basic things! You hear so many awful and ugly things from a lot of forums, but I have to believe at some point I will be able to adopt and I can help other kids along my way!
Congratulations on completing the classes and Good luck with the homestudy!!!.... We have finished our classes and our homestudy and now wait patiently for the license... Really hoping that we will get it soon so that we can make sure that we are one more home available for the holidays.. hope they don't need us from the perspective that the kids are safe with there parents, but want to be available if they do. Would hate any child to not have somewhere to go for the holidays...
Keep us posted on your progress!!!
