Join Us Friday, June 15, 2012 for Helping Adoptive Families Navigate the Overwhelming World of Social Media
The Internet and social networking sites involve risk and opportunities for all families. For adoptive families, additional fears about potential exposure can make social media sites seem even more dangerous. Many families have experienced birth parents and young people using Facebook and other web sites to find and contact birth relatives. This program will educate adoptive parents on:
- Precautions to take to protect your familys privacy and security
- Developmentally appropriate technology access
- Incorporating healthy contact and boundaries in Post Adoption Contact Agreements
- Preparing for unauthorized and unmediated contact through the internet
Please join Adoptive Families of Houston to hear two speakers discuss the way the Internet, social networking and other technologies are changing the landscape of adoption:
- Michelle Ellisor will educate us on important precautions for adults and children, provide information on media literacy and child development and discuss adoption-specific issues related to Social Media. Michelle works as a Marriage & Family Therapist Associate at Austin Psychotherapy Associates and is the Child & Family Therapist at the Town Lake YMCA Counseling Program in Austin. As a graduate student, Michelle conducted research on the rapidly developing realm of social media. Michelle has a Master of Arts in Counseling and a Bachelor's degree in Film Production. She has incorporated her knowledge of mental health, social media, and technology into her psychotherapy practice.
- Adoptive mother, Cathy Hartley, will tell her story. She will discuss how her 23 year old daughter's birth mother was able to find her on Facebook as well as the impact it has had on their family.
