It is produced by Ann Fessler, best known for writing "The Girls that went away"
Film Synopsis
A GIRL LIKE HER is the real story of ˓sex and the single girl. It reveals the hidden history of tens of thousands of young women who became pregnant in the 1950s and 60s and were banished to maternity homes to give birth, surrender their child, and return home alone. They were told to keep their secret, move on and forget. But, does a woman forget her child?
A GIRL LIKE HER combines footage from films of the time period about dating, sex, ԓillegitimate pregnancy, and adoptionԗthat both reflected and shaped the publics understanding of single pregnancy during that timeҗwith the voices of these mothers as they speak today, with hindsight, about the long-term impact of surrender and silence on their lives.
Cath, I've known about Ann Fessler's upcoming film project for a while now...and I'm really looking forward to seeing her documentary. I know she's using a lot of high-school photos of the mothers of the Baby Scoop Era, as she's been asking many of us to send her our pics via her website.
Side note: When I went to scan my high-school annual photograph that was taken a few months before I became pregnant, I was stunned at how young I really was. Seriously...I look like a baby, myself.
