Hello! I'm new here! My husband and I just decided to pursue fostering again. We went through have of the classes to become foster parents over a year ago, but decided to move out of state so we stopped. We have been at our new house for 7 months, and we have had a couple of our new neighbors mention it to us in passing, and I asked my husband about it a couple days ago and he agreed. Probably sometime this week or next I will be contacting someone down here to see what we will need to do. I'm really excited!
I don't think we'll have a problem with most everything, but I do have a few concerns. For one, we live on 5 acres and we have chickens. I don't know if that will be a problem or not. They free range, so they have full access to every part of our property.
We also have a few stray cats that hang out around our house. They are technically ours, they belong to the people next door, but they stay here a lot. Do we still have to get them vaccinated?? My husband won't be very pleased with having to spend money to vaccinate animals that aren't ours. Also, we have 3 indoor only cats. They are not up to date with their vaccinations b/c they NEVER go outside. What vaccinations do I HAVE to get them? Can I get away with just getting the required rabies shots?
Does anyone know if it is okay to use cloth diapers on foster babies? We plan to take in infants, with a same gender sibling up to age 3 if necessary. Same gender b/c we have one extra room, our 12 year old son is in the other one, but we have a full size bed and will set up a crib in the room, so they could stay in there together. I know after a certain age different gender children cannot sleep in the same room, which is why I say that. :)
I am a SAHM, and I worked in childcare with infants for 16 years before we moved. I can't wait to have a baby in our house! :) My husband grew up in the system in relative care, so he wants to give back. Hopefully we can start the classes soon!

I don't think the acreage or your livestock will be a problem at all. I think it's a good thing!
In Indiana, outside animals don't have to be vaccinated, only housepets.
I don't believe cloth diapers will be a problem, either, but if I were you, I would provide disposable diapers for visits.
The only problem you may have is with your specific age/gender range. It may be a long wait. Is your son's room big enough for 2? If you got a call for a boy with a baby sister, could you put the little boy in your son's room?
I don't know the answers for your specific state, so I'll answer the ones I know for my state...

Wouldn't be a problem in my area.

I can't answer about the outdoor cats, but the indoor cats would have to be vaccinated. Rabies only is required in my area.

Yes, but for visits it's reccomended you take them in a disposable and if you are required to provide the supplies for the visits then you should supply disposables.

In my area different gender-ed siblings can share a room regardless of age (though, at a certain age I'd imagine it would be tough to get them to actually share). I'd think since your top age is 3 you might want to consider re-thinking the same gender thing...you will seriously limit your placements, in most areas siblings under 3 of opposite genders can share a room.
Oh, I will definitely send them to visits with disposables. I don't want to risk the parents throwing my cloth diapers away. lol
I think rabies is all that is required in our state also. If so, that isn't a problem. We have a dog also (australian shep mix), but she is fully vaccinated until next May.
I should clarify...I misspoke and said that the outdoor cats are technically ours...actually, they AREN'T technically ours.
If different gendered siblings can share a room under 3 years old, I would have no problem taking whatever we get. There is no room in my son's room for another bed, plus I don't want to make my 12, almost 13 year old son share a room with a 2 year old. KWIM? I know we would have enough room for 2 carseats in my car, as I used to nanny for two little girls, so I had my son and two carseats in it and it worked just fine.
