How do people fund their adoptions?
I'm a single mom. I want to adopt again, but the high cost of domestic adoption is so intimidating!!! I adopted my 1st child through foster care- I would very much like to do that again, but I'm just not getting any calls. I want my son to have a sibling, and I would like to adopt a child the same race as he (AA).
Anyone have any ideas they would like to share????
Thanks. Eileen
Well yes adoption is almost free throug Foster, but as you are seeing there is no telling when you will get a call, especially if you are wanting a New born -3 year old with our any expensive issues.
I was reading The Idiot's Guide for adoption, and it says that most common on top of Fundraising and Grants, loans or Family, is to take a loan from your 401k

A lot of families get grant money through church or other organizations, and many families do community fundraisers.
I thought about the fundraiser. My concern is that not many would be interested since I plan to do a private domestic adoption...I think people would be much more interested in participating in a fundraiser if, say, it was for a special needs international adoption (which I would do, but the cost of international is so outside the realm of possibility for me :(
Do you think people would be open to giving money in a fundraiser for a domestic adoption? I am pretty crafty- I could sell some things at a craft sale.
I did consider loans from family or taking out a personal loan or using a credit card. My church isn't an option for financial assistance.
I think people would be open to a fundraiser for any adoption whether international or domestic.
I'm also single, and even though I have a decent income, it's still only one, which does make a difference. I did a couple of things: I took a loan from my 403b and also a loan from my mom (through her home equity, which I will repay with the tax credit). I didn't do fundraising per se, but I did start doing some sewing again (which is how I worked my way through school) and put that money aside. I really looked at my lifestyle and expesnses, too, and decided what was necessary and what was not, which freed up more for savings (and was a good idea, since I now need that money for baby needs). That said, I couldn't afford to do it that way again; there's only so much you can cut with a baby in the house. There are agencies with lower fees, as well, especially if you are open to special needs. I know of one special needs program that is very reasonable; if you're interested send me a PM and I'll give you the info.
