Tax credit question

I am confused.... my husband and I are hopefully adopting an infant girl that will be born in a few weeks. I am not able to find a straight answer to my question anywhere... We paid for our home study update, miscellaneous expenses and some expectant mom expenses in 2011. Placement and finalization will occur in 2012. Can we deduct the expenses we have paid out in 2011 on our 2011 tax return or do we have to wait until we file 2012 taxes?? Thanks!!
