On Friday evening, March 30, Lauretta (Pat) Sims, LMSW-AP and the Program Manager for Adoption and Post-Adoption Programs at DePelchin Childrens Center, will join Adoptive Families of Houston to talk about meeting the emotional needs of our children.
From her experience working as a social worker, training members of the adoptive triad and as an adoptive parent herself, Pat understands that adoption can add a different layer to our expectations of ourselves as parents. While most of us are very comfortable with our ability to meet our childrenҒs physical needs, adoption seems to change how comfortable and adequate we feel in meeting our childrens emotional needs.
With Pat guiding our discussion, the evening will be dedicated to talking about how we feel as adoptive parents and empowering us with tools that will help us feel more confident and comfortable in talking with our children about adoption issues.
Pat has worked for the state of Texas as a protective service worker; AFDC social service worker and contract worker doing court ordered investigations and studies. She has worked with adoptive families for more than 30 years. She has co-developed training curriculum for professionals and adoptive parents and has conducted training sessions at the state and national level. Pat and her husband have four children who are now adults. Three of the children were adopted as special needs children.
Light refreshments will be served. We regret that childcare will not be available.
