My wife and I are getting married in may of 2012 and I've grown very attached to her child. We have talked about having me adopted and I'm very interested but confused. She's talked to the biological father and he has no interest in the child and is willing to terminate his rights so I can adopt him. I've read that the adoption isn't final till a year after living together. The thing I can't find online is when would we be able to start the paperwork? Can we start the paperwork shortly after being married or would we have to wait a year? We live and will be married in the state of Utah.

The time you must be married/lived together varies by state. It is wonderful that the bio dad is voluntarily terminating his rights. If only all bio dads wanted to do what is best for their children :) My husband and I are using an attorney, but it is contested so it is a bit more complex. If you have the means though, an attorney would be your best bet as they will know all the hoops you will have to jump through.
