I have some questions:
*I know the name of the court that the adoption was finalized in and have my adoption paperwork. I have my amended birth certificate (I was raised by my bmom and adopted by my step-dad). Do I have to petition the court to get my OBC? Does that cost money? I am a little confused reading through all of the information on the state website.
*I think as I understand what I read, I can not get my original birth certificate without petitioning the court. What exactly does that mean?
*Or, maybe I can never see my OBC? That's where I get confused. I'm not sure what I'd find on it...but I'm curious.
I know my bdad, I (kind of) know my story, but I'd like to have a copy of my original birth certificate. I don't know why, but all of the sudden I'm on a quest.
Any help would be appreciated.

I also would like to have my original birth certificate from the state of Iowa. I petitioned at the county where I was adopted many years ago but - although it was approved by a judge - there was no OBC and not much info at all in my file. I do not live in Iowa and have no idea how to proceed to get an OBC. All my parents are now dead and I hope to see my first official document before I die.
Any help on how or where to begin would be appreciated.

Thank you for the step by step. I will do this. I have all names and dates for birth family as well as a-family. I don't know any specific judge, of course, but perhaps I should call first and ask how to proceed. I'm in my 60's so I find it irritating to jump through hoops for something so basic. Again, thank you. Lynn

BTW - I'm sure you know this, but Iowa is a closed state and I was shocked that I did get my birth certificate. I was very clear in my letters about what I wanted and why. I'm not sure why I got mine and others have not; I think it might depend on the judge. In my case, being from a small town might have actually helped me...really not sure. Good luck!
