Our situation is a bit complicated, and trying not to go all into it, I need to figure out if I can try and file the stepparent adoption papers without a lawyer. Obviously, if my ex decides to be an difficult about it, then we will get a lawyer. But im keeping my fingers crossed that it doesn't come to that. My husband is in the Marine Corps and I stay at home with our kids, so it's not like we have an abundance of extra cash laying around..
So I've done research, and I'm confused as to whether I can just file the paperwork and have my ex served (who lives in TX and is on parole, so he will likey have difficulty making court dates anyway.. ) the papers? And if he doesn't show up and contest, then every thing can move forward? Or do I actually have to fill out the termination of rights forms and have them terminated?
I have plenty of good reasons for why my 2 year old is better off without her abusive, addict of a biological father.
