I know this is last minute but I still have two full days before we leave! :-)
Can anyone who has traveled in the past tell me what kind of gifts they gave foster parents/social worker/agency rep? And the general amount you spent?
Not sure what is appropriate or what is customary. I would bring a gift for these people no matter what, it's what I would do here for just about anything (ex. hostess gift for showers, gift for someone who graciously let me or my children stay with them, etc.) so a gift for loving and caring for the child we are adopting seems like a no brainer. Problem is, even here in the States with my friends and loved ones I have a terrible time choosing gifts.
Any help, suggestions would be greatly appreciated. So far, I have a cuff bracelet/earing set for the foster mother with a hand made album of photos of her and our son; OKC Thunder shirt and hat and Oklahoma/old West photobooks for Foster dad.
I know that it is customary (and just plain normal goodwill) to give a gift to the foster parents and social worker. How about the agency's rep?
Help!!!

Firstly, good luck on your trip. What an exciting time! We brought Dunkin Donuts coffee, tea, perfume, scarves (Talbots had a great sale) and New York Yankee's logo things. That being said, I had so much stuff on trip #2 that I ended up buying another bag at the airport to carry everything on the plane. We gave to the orphanage director, our son's law guardian, our lawyer, in country facilitator, and driver.
Best of luck!
Our agency specifically told us that the foster families should receive a cash donation as opposed to gifts & to minimize gifts to kids/orphanages due to requests from staff in Poland. I think this is a policy they've developed over time. We did bring a few token gifts for the foster family, because we'd spent time with them, but truly, by the time we were done with the process, the cash donation seemed more than adequate, all things considered. We did not bring specific gifts for every in-country staff person, although we did bring a few personalized things on our second trip. We were battling with the weight limits for international travel (23 kg per suitcase, one suitcase per person) and that changed our perspective, too.
The most amusing present for any girl would definitely relate to Disney Princesses. A goodie box that includes crayons, coloring books, purses, bands, bags, images, and posters of Disney Princess can be the best gifts ideas for girls.
