It took me 8 years, but I wanted everyone in Wisconsin to know that our lives may have gotten a little bit better. In the State of Wisconsin, no adoption record for any adoptee has ever been opened (unless of course you have all willing participants and then you can only have access to whatever the Agency who adopted you out allows you and your birth parents to have - never what's in the court file. That information remains sealed.)
On June 1, 2012 a Dane County Judge in Madison, went against the norm and despite my birth mother's wishes opened the adoption file for me for medical reasons and gave me full access to what was not only in the Court File but also ordered the Agency to give me what was also in their file. What this means is that as of June 1, 2012, precidence has been set for other adoptee in the State of Wisconsin seeking to open an adoption file. However, since mine was a medical need for discovery, I don't know if other adoptees without a medical need will have the ability to Petition the Court for this information and be granted their wish, but for adoptees needing medical help found only in their Court/Agency file, it's worth a shot.
Nonetheless, it couldn't hurt to Petition the Court anyway. No one knows what'll happen until they try, and quite frankly I would love to see more people try.
Good luck and God speed.
