Ok I do not want to offend anyone with my questions here... I am being told by my ACW that two AA sisters (4 and 5) will 99% be placed with us for adoption!! OMG we are so excited!!! I am trying to get everything ready for them, but I have no idea about hair products I should use or skin care. Can you guys tell me the things I should be getting? How offend do I need to wash their hair. I just want to have everything ready to go when they get here. Thanks for all the advice.

Congratulations! I know you must be so excited. This web site Nappturality Natural Haircare Forums has been a great help in taking care of my girls hair. I try going all natural whenever possible. For a full african american i would wash hair about once a week and co-wash the other days. As for skin care the only thing I use is organic coconut oil. I get mine from amazon. I even use it on myself. Also if my daughters hair is dry on the ends i will put some coconut oil on the ends of her hair. It smells so good. :) Also for styles and product reviews try going onto youtube.com and look up "Family going Natural". I have learned how to style her hair and what works for their hair type by looking at the tutorials. Sallys Beauty Supplies has a product that I have been using alot lately "As I Am". It has no harsh chemicals and works wonderful on my DD hair. By the time you figure out what works for their hair you will have a draw full of products that you won't use. :) Good luck!

Hey Melissa, congrats on the placement. I second co-washing (washing hair with conditioner as opposed to shampoo), but I would start with washing their hair 1x per week... and then see what happens. Every head of hair is different, but I can't imagine washing more often than that would be beneficial. I wash DD's hair 1x a week, heck sometimes I go two weeks.I love the idea of coconut oil, in fact I'm a big fan of this... but again, every head is different. I use shea butter based products on DD's hair, in addition to coconut oil. Also, read, read, read... Definitely check out those sites the PP posted.
Congratulations!
I wash Peanut's hair once a week, but since he's 17 months, I have to co-wash a couple of other times a week to get cereal out, apple sauce...whatever he eats he smears in his hair! at 4 & 5, though, I'm sure that's less of an issue.
We use organic coconut oil in his hair, followed by some baby butter cream (from Miss Jessie's products) We use Shea butter on his skin, and sometimes I mix a little coconut oil in it. I buy my coconut oil at the grocery store...you can usually find it in the baking section. If you have a Trader Joes nearby, they have a pretty good price on organic coconut oil.
Good luck!
As a pp said, everyone's hair is different. With C (who is only 14 months) I don't shampoo at all. I give him a bath every couple of days and cowash every time I bathe him. I found a product at CVS that's organic and olive oil based (can't remember the name) that has a conditioner and a hair lotion, which I use every morning. After his bath I use pure shea butter in his hair and on his skin. So far this seems to be working for us.

I can't think of much to add but just one suggestion. Like others have said, hair varies. If the girls happen to have that more "in between" hair, you probably won't be able to put straight oil in it without making it stringy, so you just have to experiment. I only have one kid whose hair would soak up oil. Like others have suggested, I put the same thing on both his skin and his hair, both after his bath, so it held in moisture. In between, I used some kind of unscented, hypoallergenic lotion.
As an update to our situation... DH and I had our meeting today with the sisters SW we where told about. OMG !!! We are finally being placed. We will met the girls on Thursday then we will set up two day visits and then one over night visit. We are so excited!! the room is already set up.
