C and I spent the weekend at the beach, and he loved the sand! However, as the afternoon wore on and it wasn't so sunny I took his sunhat off (he hates it). He immediately dumped a bucket of sand over his head and then lay down and rolled around. I gave him a shower before we left the beach, then a bath at home, and sprayed his hair with the sink sprayer this morning. Some came out, but it's still pretty bad. Any advice?
*groan* I remember those days! My son had really thick hair that was quite long by the time we were allowed to cut it and he used to LOVE to dump buckets of sand on his head or roll in the sand box! I hope someone has good strategies for you. After washing out what I could, I would spend a long time with him in his high chair snacking and playing with toys while I combed and combed with a fine-toothed comb to get the sand out. That's one reason that I LOVE his short hair style now!

UGH! Sand is so hard to get out of their hair, isn't it? I keep my son's hair at 1-2 mm long. Like Oak, I also use a fine toothed comb to brush sand out of his hair.
Oh gee. That brings back memories! It takes another person to do this, but the best way I found is to have one person hold the child upside down and dangle the top of his head in water and the other rub and run their fingers through the hair. That way, gravity does a lot of it. If you had a child who freaked out over being held like that, I wouldn't do it, but we always made it playful, so they laughed.

This sounds like so much fun!!! C loves hanging upside down (he will sit on my lap and "fall" over backward to hang that way), so I don't think it will be a problem. He was exhausted and fell asleep early tonight, but I will have to find someone to help me try it tomorrow!
noelani - Thanks for the advice. i tried it tonight, holding him up with one hand and doing his hair with the other. He loved it, and almost all the sand was out in about 30 seconds! The only problem is that he now keeps trying to do handstands in his little pool. :)

I'm glad it worked for you, and that he liked it! My oldest grandson likes to stand on his head in water, too. I think your little guy is fairly close in age and its such a cute age! J is 16 months, now, and he is such a doll that we all compete over who gets to keep him when he needs to be watched for a while.
Use the blow dryer on high but with cold air and scratch/scrub upside down. I have used powder on DS's hair before (when his hair was dry) but I am not sure that would work on all hair textures or sand textures.
