i understand the importance of a child being with their biological parent but i feel way to much effort is put on reuniting rather than the actualy wellfare of the child. should the goal be to protect children or put them back in unhealthy environments just because thats where they come from? i heard of this story yesterday and it broke my heart. i didn't realize until reading this forum that he had been in the system and was reunited. i pray this opens some eyes within the state. rip little guy.

I'll have to go Google the news story about this poor little boy because I haven't seen anything at all about it in the media. All I can say is his mother must have a very severe form of psychosis. I know that previous instances involving decapitation of young children almost always involve full-blown psychotic breakdowns, most often paranoid schizophrenia. I think there was a similar case in Texas a few years ago.
In this era of economic meltdown and budget crises at both the state and county levels, indigent adults are simply not receiving much treatment for their mental illnesses. So not only are counties reunifying foster kids faster, they're endangering them by not making sure that their parents are receiving proper treatment.
Looks like this case is causing DYFS to more closely examine BP's with mental health issues. I keep in touch with one of my former placements mother. She has mental health issues but was due to have her case completely closed last month. RU happend last Feb but BM has been struggling so DYFS kept her case open longer than they normally would post RU. Anyway she was informed that because of her mental health issues she will need to attend additional counseling, therapy etc and that they will not close her case until everyone involved is confident she is "ok". Her worker told her this is a direct result of the Camden case. I have to say I'm really glad for this. I don't think BM would her her child but her mental health issues are really bad. I really like her as a person but her problems are extensive and not curable but some weekly therapy. She's really not fit to raise a child.
I agree. We are in Camden county and we got a 4 month old about a week after that happened. The parents don't have a place to live (this is why they were called in the first place - or one of the reasons) and the mom has had kids put in care before. The judge wanted to send him back home, even though there was not a stable living environment, but it does appear that the mom has mental issues and I think that information is what kept him with us. The dad seems ok, but the mom defiantly has issues. It's a shame, but I am glad they didn't rush him back until they know more about her & what's going on.
If this is the recent story I'm familiar with, it was a full-blown psychotic episode, but drug-driven. In fact, this was not the only disturbingly vicious and bizarre murder there recently that was drug fueled. One theory is that the batch of heroin sold in that area was somehow contaminated and police are trying to track it down so they can test it. Incredibly sad.
