Armstrong commanded the Apollo 11 spacecraft that landed on the moon July 20, 1969, capping the most daring of the 20th century’s scientific expeditions. His first words after setting foot on the surface are etched in history books and the memories of those who heard them in a live broadcast.
“That’s one small step for (a) man, one giant leap for mankind,” Armstrong said.
I remember the day vividly...
Today is a sad day now that he has passed away...
Kind regards,
Dickons
Neil Armstrong was one of my heroes when I was a kid. Dickons, like you I remember watching the moon landing in the Summer of 1969 like it just happened yesterday. What a marvelous event that was -- it took our collective breath away as a nation that day.
Rest in peace, Neil. You were a hero and idol to so many American kids. You were an "engineers' engineer" and an outstanding role model. Thank you from a grateful nation.

We were at a lake and my Dad had a tv that could plug into the cigarette lighter on the car. He had the moon landing on and a number of people came over to watch this little 9" picture with us.
I, too remember it well.
