The state I live in will not let me adopt through agency because I am single. Does anyone know how I could adopt another child privately. No I am not trying to talk someone on here to let me adopt theirs, I am asking where should I start to look to get information on adopting as a single parent.
I have a little boy that I adopted in 08 and it was a private adoption. So the state didn't have much to do with it. If someone can help me with some information that would be great. I live in MS and I have tried for a couple of years and they keep telling me that I have to be married first. I think that is wrong. Just because I am single does not make me a wrong candidate to adopt but according the dhs here. I am not able to adopt cause I am not married.
Please someone help me with this problem..
Thank you and look forward to any help.
Trish
I find that rather odd. I am single and will finalize my second adoption, through dhs next week. I know of many, many single people - men and women who have adopted through dhs. Makes no sense at all. I would talk with someone else at dhs.

Thank You, I will talk to whom ever I need too. I adopted my son but it was private and I talked to dhs and they said I had to be married. I am engaged but I had to be married first to even apply.
Try talking to some adoption agencies instead of DHS -- I think you'll find that a lot of the agencies allow single women to adopt babies. It's so strange to me to hear that Mississippi's DHS doesn't allow single-parent adoptions -- we've been doing them for a long time now out here in California. But I do remember when it wasn't allowed at all. I guess I just assumed all the states were as progressive as our state is.
I have heard about a couple of states that will not allow singles to adopt through the state; I recently came across one where singles could not even foster (can't remember what state, though).
I agree - talk to some agencies. You can adopt through an out-of-state agency as well, but you will need a homestudy through an agency in your state.
