Okay, really what I want is a crystal ball, but I'll take any advice, BTDT stories or other comments you feel would help.
We have been matched with a 10 month old baby who is already having physical therapy and occupational therapy. He has been described as hyperactive with low sensory skills, slow movements due to lack of fine motor development, he is receiving services for speech and sensory development b/c he has eating and feeding issues. (Which I'm having trouble believing b/c the photo they sent was of a FAT squishy baby!) They also say he has tantrums that include crying and flailing limbs when he doesn't get his way, and requires a LOT of attention/is very social/babbles a lot. We know he was born substance-exposed, but don't know what substances.
So high needs, yes. Special needs? I'm having trouble deciding whether he sounds a lot like my son (who had feeding issues and received some OT for it) or if he sounds like he could have some real SPD or ASD-like problems.
Does this sound like any of your kids? If so, I want to hear about them! (The good, the bad, and the ugly!)
Can't help you on some of this, but regarding the fat baby when you've been told he has feeding issues.....
We once had a baby who was supposed to have feeding issues...and it was true. The baby was on zantac type stuff and then some. The foster family was feeding the baby toddler type baby food (as in, desserts, etc) when the baby had only 4 teeth. The baby was having a lot of tough digestive stuff going on, yet they were plugging the child with meds in order to give the baby higher than needed baby food and the baby certainly was a chub!
To remedy the situation, we went back to basics. We fed this baby nothing but a bottle and formula...NO baby food for awhile. We were able to take away the meds completely and the child thrived.
Regarding the baby's behaviors, I'd ask if the baby could be tested-chromosomally----through mircro-array...not just a traditional chromosome panel. (Micro-array may find many abnormalities not picked up by traditional chromosome tests.)
HTH
Sincerely,
Linny

Whatever they've been feeding him, we're definitely going to be going back to basics. Makes me wonder though...
As for the chromosome testing, what is that supposed to find? Is there anything specific I should be asking them to look for, or is it just a test that looks at everything for any abnormality?
Sounds just like my son.
He was a terror until we figured out what kind of sensory input he needed. We're also just now discovering that he has a sensitivity to dairy and soy.
My son is an awesome 3 year old now. Does great at preschool, very social, very athletic. Outperforms 5 year olds at his martial arts classes, and was swimming at 2 1/2. He had horrific fine motor skills when he was a baby, but has just started tracing letters with no problems!
Don't let that baby's description discourage you. He could turn out completely fine by 2 1/2 (my son was pretty well regulated at 2 1/2, with outbursts here and there, but we've solved that by taking dairy and soy completely out of his diet).
Our son just recently started having tantrums, so it is difficult to differentiate them from standard toddler-ness. HOWEVER, I can say that a lot of what you described seems like SPD or SID, which our son was just recently diagnosed with. FWIW - that is a much better diagnosis than EI's NOS-delays...for which they had no real hope of improvement.
Forgive me, but I'm a total newbie to all of this... Can you explain what all those TLAs mean? ;-)
