DH and I are considering adopting a sibling group of 4, ages 7, 4, 3 and 1. Oldest is a boy and younger 3 are girls. The 7 and 4 year old have mild mental retardation and the 7 year old also has mild autism. I am familiar with mental disabilities as I lived with my aunt who was a care provider for mentally disabled children, and I frequently helped her out in her work. Now DH has 3 sons from a previous marriage, ages 19, 17 and 15 soon to be 16. The 19 year old no longer lives with us.
We currently rent our home now and are going to look at bigger houses tomorrow so we may start the adoption process. My question is in the state of Massachusetts, where we live, are their guidelines on how big our house needs to be? We are looking at houses between 4 bedroom to 7 bedrooms. We make about $64,000 a year combined income so we can't afford a huge house payment and need to know if I could get away with a smaller house or if I need to pony up the money for a bigger place. Any input would be GREAT! Thanks!

You can usually google the standards for your state, which will tell you the requirements. I believe, in California, it's up to 4 kids in one room. I'm in Texas now, and I think it's up to 3 kids in one room. Some states have a square footage per kid requirement, some just have a number of kids per bedroom. Both states I have lived in have rules about boys and girls sharing a room past a certain age. I would say that you need a minimum of 4 bedrooms, one for you and the hubby, one for the two teenagers, one for the 7 year old boy, and one for the three little girls. Both Texas and California allow you to keep a baby in your room, in Cali, I think it's till age 3. But, if it is for adoption, the CW will ask what your plan is for after the child turns 3. Good luck!

we brought in 3 boys to put 5 in one room, with a "waiver" or approval of SW, with the knowledge we were pursuing a bigger home.
It was total chaos for 38 days! lol, but we did it, I tell ya, moving to a new home for the little guys all together with the family was crazy, nuts and insane, but it really did something special for them.
We all as a family unit moved into together. I am glad now we waited for them to be in our home prior to moving.
I still get a twitch thinking about the squished times we had in our little house.
