I have seen several claims that Magnesium, Zinc and Fish Oils help children with ADHD and SPD. Has anyone tried these supplements and what are your opinions? I have a 5 year old and a 4 year old with both ADHD and SPD. I have been giving them fish oil for about 2 months and see a minor improvement in my ds (he is playing with toys for the first time, but still highly impulsive and out of control), but not my dd. I met with an OT who told me that she wasn't saying it as an OT, but to look into magnesium. I am just quite worried and a bit overwhelmed at this point, because I don't know how much of each to give, and I don't want to give multiple vitamins either for fear that supplements are being overlapped. My thought, at this point, is that it couldn't hurt to try it (as long as I'm not overdosing them). I see various vitamins out there, from expensive, health food store ones to generic ones at Target that claim that they have Fish Oil, but maybe not Magnesium, etc. Anybody have any experience?
We have gone down this road because I was at the end of my rope, and ready to ask for medications for my 3 year old.
Personally, I wouldn't do any of this without a nutritionist/holistic practitioner/health coach/etc.
Like you said, it's VERY overwhelming. Ours had us logging all food and behaviors every day, and she made recommendations based on that and what she knows of my son.
Magnesium did nothing for my son. Apparently, the fish oils that are worth their salt are expensive (we pay $65 for the nordic naturals ultimate omega xtra).
What worked best for my son was removing dairy and soy completely from his diet. It was like I had medicated him. Less impulsive, making better choices, etc.
Nobody who knows my son can believe the difference in him. It's nuts.
We are still working with our nutritionist, and are about to have a trial of going gluten free (in addition to soy/dairy free) for 6 months starting next month. If it helps him, it will be worth the agony.
Good luck. I hope you find something that works for you.

We tried the fish oil with my daughter and didn't see anything.
You may not want to do this, but giving some caffine, can help a little. Saw more improvement with caffine vs. the fish oil.
There is very strong evidence that fish oil is effective for ADHD in many children. My dds psychiatrist actually recommends it. Some studies sugget it may be as effective as stimulants like Ritalin. However, it does not work for every child. Of course, neither do stimulants.
It is important to get a good quality fish oil, as supplements are not regulated like medications, and sometimes do not contain what they claim. I get ours from a local pharmacy. I pay a lot more then I would at for fish oild at Wal-Mart, or Target but I know I am getting what I pay for.
I have not seen research behind other supplements.
