Hello all... I know that we have had many, many threads about name changes but I am going to bring it up yet again. We have an 8 month old FS that we have had since birth. From the very beginning our caseworker has told us that she does not ever see him returing home. FS has a very nice, normal name that suits him fairly well however DH has two cousins with the same name - one of whom also shares our last name- so he feels strongly about changing FS's name when TPR occurs. The problem that we are having is when to start calling him by the name we intend to give him. His bio parents have said they do not have time for services and have quit all visitation. They have had two appointments to surrender their rights but have no showed at both appointments. At this point the caseworker says that they will just be moving to TPR. We were waiting for surrender to start calling him "our" name but now with the process dragging out we are wondering - should we just start now so that he can get used to a new name before he is much older?
Appreciate your answers from you who have BTDT.
Thanks! :thanks:

From what you have said, it really seems highly unlikely he will be RU'd, so I would start now. Start using the new name with the old name. That's how we changed our DD's name and she was 18 months old. If the old name is James and the new name is George, just mix them up, use both together and call him James George and then next time say George James. This way he'll get used to hearing the new name associated with his old name and come to accept either name.
