We have a 12 year old boy that has been with us for 7 months. The couple that had adopted him gave us power of attorney because they did not want him anymore. He has become part of our family and we love him dearly. The previous adoptive parents have not even asked about him or contacted him. Now they have decided that they do not want him to have their name anymore and told us we either need to adopt him or they are going to take him from us to place for adoption. We have no problem adopting him but it will cost us $8000 and we simply do not have access to that amount of money at this time. Does anyone have any advice or options for us? We live in Colorado.
Is that legal fees?
I'd call a couple of adoption attornies in your area and ask them what it would cost. In the case, I don't see why it would be $8k. That seems high to me.

It does not cost $8000 for a private adoption.. You need a lawyer experienced in family law. Most states have a period of time, after which, abandonment is assumed. Once that happens, you can often sue for custody
I too, think $8,000.00 is high. I also think in many cases, the parents doing the dissalution end up paying the bulk of the fees because they have to terminate their rights. You might need to pay for the homestudy and then finalization court costs but you should ask the disrupting family to cover the attorney fees.
The parents need to get an experienced adoption attorney and that attorney will start the process.
If you both live in CO, there shouldn't be extreme fees, imo.
