May 10, 2013: Navigating a Successful Semi-Open/Open Adoption
Boundary setting, clear expectations and clear communication are of upmost important to ensure a successful relationship in semi-open and open adoptions. Whether you have ongoing face-to-face contact, communicate by letters sent through your agency or are anywhere in between, please join Adoptive Families of Houston for an insightful session with Jan Deets, Family Services Director/Administrator for Alternatives in Motion.
To aid the group in building these important connections between birth and adoptive families, Jan will discuss:
- Dos and DonҒts to building a successful relationship
- Tools for ensuring birth and adoptive family expectations remain aligned
- Setting and maintaining appropriate boundaries
- The importance of honest, transparent communication in building healthy relationships
- Developmental milestones and life events
Jan has worked for AIM since 1986 with a goal of educating birth families and adoptive families about the adoption process and to be a source of support as they find comfort in their choices. Jan and her husband Alan are adoptive parents to their six children, Jeremy, Alana, Jennifer, Wade, Westin and Joni.
Light refreshments will be served. We regret that childcare will not be available.
