Our youngest, who is almost 3yo, has comorbid diagnoses of austism and DD. No one is quite sure which has a greater impact on his functioning at this point.
DS currently receives EI services at his daycare, but it amounts to less than 2hours of services weekly, and it's inconsistent at that. We did more intensive services through our local hospital before he was adopted and they were the only providers who accepted MA, but he made little progress, partially b/c the therapsists there were not well versed in dealing with children, much less with children with autism.
Children's Hospital recommended 40 hours of ABA weekly. Insurance doesn't cover this (yet).
Kennedy Krieger recommended 10 hours of ABA, along with PT, OT and speech, and enrollment in a special needs preschool classroom (through the public school system).
The public school system, at our upcoming IEP meeting, is going to recommend that he transition from a home-based program to a school-based program. He would likely attend 3 mornings/week and get his (rather scarce) therapy services in the classroom. They do not, at this time, feel that ABA will be beneficial.
However, now that we have adopted him, he can get unlimited habilitative services (PT, ST, OT) through a private practice that also does ABA therapy - so we can pay for a few hours of that weekly, too, and all of his therapists will implement the techniques in an integrated approach with him.
So, here is the question - do we do private therapy (PT, ST, OT and ABA) four times/week, or do we do two days of private therapy, mixed with three days of preschool? Doing the private therapy would be a bit more difficult for us to manage, b/c we'd have to transport him to and from the center (though they would take care of him fully while he was there, so we wouldn't have to be there with him). BUT...he is more than 50% delayed, and the school system has already indicated that there is limited "hope" for him - so I'm not sure if that is the best environment for him.
Bottom line - 4 days/week of 2.5-4 hours of private therapy, or 2 days/week of therapy combined w/3 days of pre-school?

Weeeellll...to me I'd expend the effort, especially given his age. Good services at this stage of the game may give him the boost he needs, and mean fewer needed services later. (Or not.) So I'd go with transporting him for the private therapies in greater quantities.Any situation that doesn't envision limitless possibilities for my child is going to only be willing to expend a minimum of effort on his behalf. I'm not talking pie in the sky stuff, be really, who has this crystal ball that lets them know that my kid is already topped out as to potential? "Never walk", "Won't be a rocket scientist", etc., are all things that I just don't accept. Not that they're wrong, but who knows??

I'm with Barksum. I personally know how tiring it can be to transport a little one time and time again.....but if it will bring the biggest opportunities, I'd try it. I'm sorry your school has this type of attitude. I know we shouldn't go overboard insisting our kids will 'become normal', but drawing the line and saying, 'This is all we need to do because the child won't be XYZ'....well....just not good, period.
Sincerely,
Linny
