We've recently been presented with an opportunity to adopt my adopted sons younger cousin. She is not currently in the foster system but has become a hardship for her mother. My son is 6, his cousin 2, we see the family frequently, any thoughts on this and how to go about it the least expensive but legal way?
I'm not an expert but I think you could start with a "guardianship" of the child without dealing with the adoption part. I would call a local lawyer that deals in Family Law to help with the adoption paperwork. Maybe the local legal aid center for your city or county can recommend someone that does pro bono work or for lower fees?
