My husband and I have been talking about trying to adopt a child through the state's foster care system. He has some concerns, and I was hoping somebody might know the answer to. If he's been through counselling, would the agency expect to see the therapists records? He is considering talking with somebody to work through a past trauma, but doesn't want it to affect our ability to adopt in the future...In reality, he just wants to make sure he is prepared to be the best parent he can to a child...
Thanks for the help, I'm just not sure how much detail they will want about things like this.
I had been through counseling and the state required a letter from my therapist stating that, in his opinion, I was stable and emotionally prepared to parent/adopt. They never asked for anything more than that.

We had the same issue and had to get letters from any recent or current therapists about our reason for counseling and how long we went. Most were careful to protect our privacy and wrote fairly general letters about our goals and such. All of them actually offered to let us read them first before submitting them to the agency. In our homestudy we had to speak about any past trauma, set backs (including if we had ever been fired) and the losses we have faced. I think they were more concerned with how we faced things and handled our feelings than anything else.
We were asked about any past trauma or abuse during our home study, and if there had been any therapy would have been seen as a positive to deal with it.
No details. Since DH's therapy had ended, all we needed to do is get a letter from our general practitioner that he was fit to foster/adopt

That's what I was going to say - it shows that he - you as a family - are proactive and serious about being mental and emotional prepared to raise a family.
