I'm new to this,
My husband & I were foster parents, with the intention of adopting the child, if available. now we are wanting to strictly adopt.
For people who have adopted through foster care I'm wondering about your experience of adopting. Did you go through a foster/adoption agency like kinship? were you foster parents who were able to adopt your foster child?
Or
Were you looking to strictly adopt through family & children's services?
How long did it take until you were matched/placed with a child?
We met yesterday with a woman who handles adoptions through the county. But being limited to your specific county is hard.
So I emailed Kinship & a woman called me back. They only charge $150 to finalize the adoption. You pay for fingerprinting. So it's very little cost. Vs. the county I'm not sure how much their fees are.
With kinship they work to match you with other counties throughout california.
So... I'm going to have to adoption paper work through the county & in addition go through kinship.
Anybody who wants to share any information would be wonderful.
Thanks,
Bonnie

We will be finalizing the adoption of our 5 yo foster son in a couple of weeks. We went through the county. Our story has gone like this:decided to adopt march 2011PRIDE training August-October 2011foster and adoption home studies done by march 2012we got many calls from the emergency placement (hotline) for foster care, but didn't take anycall from adoption sw in may 2012 about a 4 yo boyhe was placed with us june 2012adoption will be final in a few weeks, one day shy of a year from when he was placed with usThe county has been great. I have ben surprised by how wonderful our social worker has been- attentive, responsive, etc. There was almost no cost (under $200 total) We just love our little guy to pieces. Can't wait to be a forever family!! Good luck in your journey!

We adopted our boys through the county and are being placed with a 7yr old girl soon that we also plan on adopting.
The county has been awesome (Riverside). We had absolutely no out of pocket cost (aside from gas to drive to PRIDE classes). We are listed as an "Adopt Home Only." That being said, the children are technically "Foster Children" until the adoption is final. My signature line has our timeline. During the process, a day seemed like a month. Now that we've adopted our boys and are being placed with our girl, it seems like its gone by in the blink of an eye. I would HIGHLY recommend the county!
Side note: Its my understanding that the county gets the kids first. The foster kids that they're unable to place with a family registered with the county are then placed with an agency.
Double check with the agency about Home Study fees. The county covers the cost of our Home Studies (we, however, cannot use them elsewhere). Its my understanding that Home Studies can be a few thousand dollars.
