Mood stabilizers, such as lithium, are normally used for bipolar disorder. They can also sometimes be used for depression, if the symptoms are more similar to bipolar depression vs. regular depression, even if there is no evidence of manic symptoms.
Antipsychotics can be used for psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia, as well as for mood disorders such as bipolar or depression when there are psychotic features (such as hallucination or delusions). Antipsychotics are also sometimes used for bipolar disorder even when there aren't full-blown psychotic symptoms, and they can be used in low doses to help with behavior issues such as aggression regardless of diagnosis.
