What is it called when someone knows the answer but the words don't come out of their mouth? For example: What do you want for breakfast? They just stand there and look at you. Also, when with more than one person can't keep up with the conversation because it is going to fast for them. Is that audio processing disorder? I am not trying to label a child. Just trying to help a friend find information to help their child. Thank you!

Word finding is anomia. I have it in connection with my expressive aphasia. It's incredibly anonying being the person who knows the word/answer but just can't quite retrieve it even though I can see it/know it. I often have to describe what I am trying to say in a different manner - taking the long route - so in your example instead of saying "pancakes" because I can't find the word, I would say - you know you make batter and cook it and add syrup. Kind regards,Dickons

If it happens on occasion, the way it happens to everyone, I've heard it referred to as TOT (tip of tongue) Phenomenon. When it is an ongoing problem, speech pathologists can diagnosis anomia, apraxia, but it is also referred to as word finding or word retrieval difficulties. I developed this after taking medication years ago. It is much better then it was when I took the medication, but my kids still like to laugh when I say things like, "Please go put your dishes in the washing machine" or "I need you to go get the milk from, um, um, that box thing in the kitchen." My youngest dd has more problems in this area. She works it a speech pathologist. Who is helping her find ways to access the missing words, and to communicate while multi tasking. For example, she can't talk and complete a project with her hands at the same time.
Parenting over 40, ANY of Richard Lavoie's videos are well worth the time to watch. He's one of my favorite people to read or listen to via video seminars because HE GETS IT, and doesn't think less of the child - or the parents! - for the issues stemming from learning disabilities or brain damage. :D
