Hi everybody,
We were recently asked to adopt a distant relative from back east and happily accepted. The judge ordered the ICPC expedited but since we aren't close enough relatives and he's over 3 we aren't eligible for that. I was just curious if anyone knows how long we might be looking at. I have been reading on here and some from a few years ago say as long as 6 months (!!!) but the ICPC website for CA says that once the paperwork is submitted there should be a decision in 30 working days (6 weeks). Is that reality? I know I have very little control over it I just like to plan if I can. :)
We are already foster-adopt certified (but with an FFA, which I think that the sending state isn't too thrilled about). I don't think the paperwork has been submitted yet because they haven't gotten our homestudy from our agency.
I am also contemplating flying out there to meet him if it's 6 months but if it's 6 weeks I might just fly out to pick him up!!
Thanks so much for your thoughts!
From everything I've read, depending on who you get will make all the difference time wise. We're in southern California. From our initial inquiry to paperwork arriving to our local office took 16 weeks- for us, that is before we can even really start anything. It has been over a week now since out ICPC arrived locally, we haven't received the paperwork, and pretty much everything we were told previously has been contradicted. It is, for us, a very time consuming and frustrating process but we are just keeping going. I hope yours goes quickly and smoothly. In our understanding we don't get to go get her when it is all approved, we have to wait for them to send her, which is another whole agonizing process. Our new dilema is that the child has now been TPR'd which we were really excited about, except that now they say that she is not considered a family member, and so the rules of our ICPC change. Hoping for the best for you!

Wow, that does sound like long time. And they do get so complicated! We are only 3 weeks in but right now it's not looking like it should be complicated. But that might just mean we aren't far enough along to know what problems we might have. :)
I think I might plan a visit. It drives me crazy I haven't even met him yet! And if it's going to be a while I want to meet everyone.
Thanks for you input! I hope yours will get moving now that it's finally in state!!!
You mentioned moving the child is another whole process. Do you know what is involved in that? The Grandma has also offered to bring him out.
icpc paperwork can take weeks to months (in our case, also a relative), it was about 3 months
i assume the PP mentioned about moving - once the icpc is approved, you're a bit at the mercy of the sending state's CW. they might suggest a slow visitation process, or thy might do what they did in our case - call me and say, you can get her tomorrow :happydance:
if at all possible, set up some visits prior.
We just heard that nobody has ever explained to the mom that she could have an open adoption and place him with non-family (seems like an important piece of information she should have a right to to me!). Since we are on the opposite side of the country she is looking into local families. We are feeling rather cut off all the sudden. We haven't given up but we might just not have any choice. His state doesn't give legal preference to family from what I can tell online (and we are family a couple times removed as it is).
They also would ask us to redo our homestudy with the state as they don't want to pay the higher private agency rate (which we would be willing to do!).
Thanks for your thoughts. We will just have to see where this goes.
