Does anyone remember what size fire extinguisher you have to have? and how many fire extinguishers you need in a home? I cant remember. I live in Harris County if that helps.
I think I got the big ones last time because I did not know and I have to buy them again and donҒt want to spend all that money if I dont need too.
Thanks!
We got a 5ABC fire extinguisher then went and had it inspected/tagged. I'm in Region 8 and in my city there is a company that does the tagging free of charge for foster parents. I would ask your agency if there is one in your city as well. Also, in my region it's one extinguisher per floor. Hope that helps!!! :)

Thanks, checked with my agency first and they told me to just buy new ones bc they did not of a place to get it inspected. And when I asked how many I needed they said well just do what you did last time....so not helpful at all...I think I went over kill last year with the size so I wanted to double check before I buy more.
That awesome that you have a place that will check it for free!!
Look in the phone book for a fire equipment store and they should be able to check and tag the extinguisher for you. The place here charges $6 each extinguisher. Or look at the tags on the extinguishers at stores, dr's office, police office for the name of whomever attached their tag and snap a pic of the tag and give them a call.
You don't need to buy new extinguishers every year, just get it checked and tagged, they are good for 10 years.
I agree with Ally_Deville, I'd look on google or in the phone book and see if you can't find a place that will do the inspecting and the tagging. I'd casually mention you are a foster parent and who knows, they may surprise you and do it for free. You could even contact your local fire department. They might be able to do them for you and if not, they for sure would know where to direct you.
I live in a small one story house so I only had to buy one for our requirements, however, I'm the overly cautious type and bought a small one for the bedroom. :D
The fire marshal who did your fire safety inspection should also be able to tell you where to get them tagged. I googled Houston fire equipment and fire safety equipment, there were several hits. I don't know if you live in Houston but it might be worth the drive if your city doesn't have a fire safety company. Stores would not replace their extinguishers yearly, there has to be someone in town or nearby that does inspections.

As a PP said, it is one per floor - they should be ABC - 5 pounds minimum, I believe - my current one says that it is 6 lbs.
Mine have the gage on it that says that it is fully charged -
I bought new ones, so I don't remember, but the gentleman who did my home inspection had said that either he can do recharges or knows who can.
I too am in Harris County.
It is so much cheaper to just refill them. Hope you find somewhere to do that. It is one per floor here too. I don't remember the size.
When you do buy them, make sure you get the ones with metal handles. When I had the ones done at my shop, the company that does inspections in my area told me they aren't allowed to refill the plastic handled ones.
Like someone said, either search for fire supply (or call the fire department, they can tell you who does them in your area) or look at the tags on the ones at stores you go to. there will be a company name and contact because you have to have them inspected yearly in all businesses.
