I have a question for all of you who have been doing this for awhile. We have said that we will take childrens between the ages of 0-12. I have a full time job as well as my husband. My job is quite flexible, but in the case that a new born is placed with you how do you handle day care? Do any daycares take new borns? Do you take FMLA or vacation time. I can do all of these I am just curious how others have handled it. Thanks
Hello and welcome!!! I'm not in your state but I know that from what I've read on these boards and what I know of in my state, most daycares will not take infants younger than 6 weeks of age. Now, sometimes, the independtly owned daycares will be a little more flexible. We have a daycare in our neighborhood that has been around since 1980 and the lady told us when we went to go tour it, that she will accept a newborn as young as 4 weeks for foster parents. As for FMLA, my company offers it, but any time I take I have to use vacation and sick days or not get paid. I would talk with your H/R dept and go around and tour some daycares if you have some time off. In my state, before we get state approval for paid daycare, it is required that we go and tour the one we want to go to. Good luck!!!! :D

I am in New Jersey and while I haven't needed to use daycare, it usually is a VERY GOOD idea to have a daycare already picked out and know their policy on infants. Most places will not take an infant younger than 6 weeks of age. So FMLA would be great to use, definitely speak with HR to be familiar with the process. When I have had workers ask me if I needed daycare, it was always assumed that I already had one picked out to use...
I used a private home (licensed) provider for a foster newborn. Used FLMA leave. NJ also gives adoptive (not sure about foster) a stipend for 6 weeks for time spent bonding-that was nice. Good luck.
