It's been a while since I posted, but we've got a doozy of a problem happening right now.
J, 14, Autism, Severe ADHD and Severe Anxiety was placed on indefinite suspension pending expulsion for bringing kitchen knives to school. He did not get these out of his bag. He did not tell anyone he had them. They were found during a random and routine locker check because he tends to have sticky fingers.
His private school has asked us to have him write a letter explaining his behavior. I don't honesty know if he even understands what he did as he has very poor understanding of cause and effect.
If they kick him out, he has to go back to public school until we can find him another placement which may not be until next school year.
We're at a complete loss with all of this as this is so out of character for my son. (I think this may be the reason they have not expelled him yet)
I'm looking for some real been there, done than when is comes to issues like this a schools.
Thanks.

If I remember right, I know which school you said your son attends (we lived in the area, and actually plan to move back so DS can attend that school in a few years). Lack of cause-effect thinking can not be new to them. Impulse control and poor executive functioning is not new to them. I'm sure, if you help guide him through the letter explaining what he intended to do with the "weapons" (e.g., nothing), they will take that into account. If they are asking him to explain himself, they are probably looking for a way NOT to expel him--or at least to consider it. The fact that it's a private school could work for you or against you...they probably don't have to hold a manifestation hearing (to determine if the behavior was a result of his disability), but they also probably don't have a "zero tolerance policy" either.
Well, they decided that they "could no longer service him" so no we're faced with finding a school fast or he loses his scholarship. There is another school in town that handles a solely autistic population that we are hoping to get him in. We had already started the process for next year when all of this happened. When I spoke with them yesterday, they said they may have a spot available soon.In the meantime, I'm home indefinitely with a child who is seriously disregulated, in a massive downward spiral and generally just doesn't like me very much right now. Not a lot of fun, that's for sure.
