Hello,
I live in TN and my husband and I are in the process of being approved as foster parents. We were told during orientation that we would get a call by our third class from our home study writer to set up our home study. However, we finished all seven classes without hearing a peep. One week after finishing, we got a call from our case worker directly (we had been given his name by our class instructor) and he said he was going to do the home study himself. He scheduled all four visits within the next two weeks of each other.
He was very interested that we were willing to take sibling groups (even though many have said first time foster parents only get one child, he wanted to know if we had room for 2-3).
While I was on the phone with him I asked how long it would take after his visits to get officially approved and he said "well... we have 120 days" and left it at that. Do you think if he's rushing to get all four visits in, and saying he's interested in approving us fast (so fast he's doing it himself instead of waiting for the home study writer) he will really wait the 120 days?
How fast CAN it go? We were supposed to have a meeting with DCS before our classes were over but that got cancelled so we weren't really ever taught about the process of how being approved or getting a placement works. What should we expect?
Our Timeline:
Orientation: 9/2013
Fingerprints: 9/2013
Finished Classes: 10/2013
Call from Caseworker: 11/4/2013
First and Second Homestudy: Scheduled for Week of 11/11
Third and Fourth Homestudy: Scheduled for Week of 11/18

It's so different everywhere! I would say if there is a great need in your area then it will go fast. We had our temp license and first placement within about 4 months from the start of the first class, and we delayed a bit converting an office into another bedroom. If your home is all set I would say just be ready!

Hi! We are in TN also. What part are you in? We are in West Tn (pm me for county). We just got liscensed on Oct 10th and we still don't have a placement. We keep having to turn down calls that are out of our age range. We can take up to 3 and our age range is 0-6. What is yours?

We aren't even close to finishing classes but I used to be a social worker before my daughter was born. The "We have 120 days" means nothing. He is just telling you the law - that it won't be more than 120 days. I don't know how much work he has to do or if he's the type to drag his feet, but most social workers I knew tried to wrap things up faster than the time we were allowed. The reason is, there is always new work coming in and if you let something sit on your desk the whole 120 days, it gets buried & you forget it's there. So in my opinion, unless he is ridiculously busy, it probably will be less than 120 days. He just didn't want to tell you less in case he couldn't keep his promise.

Middle TN and we have the same. Up to 3 and 0-6 ideally although we will consider 7/8 as long as they don't have huge violence issues (we have dogs and my husband and I are only in our mid 20s)
