Our 16 yr old AS has had 7 psychiatric hospitalizations, spent 11 months in RTC,and 7 months in TFc . He came home last April. His last hospitalization was Sept. 2012. He has been doing relatively well with occasional problems but it has been so much better then before he went to RTC. That is until yesterday. He started fighting with his younger brother(one of his favorite targets) and it escalated to him throwing stuff, kicking his brother in the side, threatening to kill him and taking off. He came back in a minute or two later and said he wasn't going to school, he needed to be hospitalized and he was going to kill himself. He took a knife from the kitchen and went outside. He said he tried to stab himself but it hurt too much and he stopped. He came in put knife away and went to his room.
I called crisis and my husband went to check on him and he pretended he was dead. His therapists from family based services, crisis worker and his CM from another organization all came out. He was talking with them for awhile and then said his medicine isn't working. I looked at him and said since when since you have never said that before. He said about the one to help him sleep which we have mentioned at his last several med checks but our son always tells dr it is ok doesn't affect him so dr doesn't do anything. He looked at me and said I don't care because I have never done anything about it at which his therapist spoke up because she has been to these med checks with us. He got mad and left the house but came back in the back way and went to his room. It was decided he needed to be hospitalized and he was happy.
The problem is he knows how to play the system to get what he wants. Last April when he first came home and was having a hard time adjusting to school here again he wrote a suicide note. He was not hospitalized because he didn't have a plan for how he was going to do it. So this time he used the knife so he would get hospitalized. We believe it was because of a project due in school that he was stressing out about. His therapists believe this too and after talking to his SW in school today she believes it had something to do with it too.
I am sure he was really happy last night when our van died on the interstate(luckily we got it to the side of the road) when we were following the ambulance to the psych hospital so we never made it. Now he can tell them everything as his version.
I am so not looking forward to a couple more years of this when we thought this part was behind us. I also really worry for his future if he is going to be constantly running from anything that is a little difficult or he doesn't like.

Dang. I thought you were over the hump. Did they keep him at the hospital? I hope he doesn't manage to manipulate his way into a long term stay if that is not what he needs.
I'm sorry you continue to go through this with him and he continues to be so manipulative. I understand it's his mental illness, but it doesn't make it easier on you.
